Road Smart

Road Smart is a road safety education and training program designed to build on the knowledge, skills and behaviours of Year 10 (or equivalent) students, laying the foundations for safe driving among young drivers.

Funded by the Victorian Government, Road Smart is an initiative that supports and enhances Victoria’s Graduated Licensing System, featuring:

  • An interactive classroom session
  • eLearning for students and their supervising drivers
  • An in-car session (off-road or on-road)*
  • A teacher resource toolkit linked to the Victorian Curriculum.

* There are two options for schools for the in-car session.

  1. Off-road – A group session for 1 hour (3 students per car) at a driver training centre. Most driver training centres take between 21-24 students per session.
  2. On-road – An individual session for 45 minutes for learner permit holders with an approved Road Smart Driving Instructor.

Lara Driving School is an approved provider for the Road Smart program. Once students have completed the in-class session, students are eligible to attend a free in-car session.

In accordance with VicRoads privacy policy, online parental/guardian consent is required so that the students can be registered in the VicRoads portal. Students will then gain access to eLearning modules and allocated a lesson ID that can be redeemed for a free in-car session. The forms can be downloaded from the VicRoads website or email

For on-road session bookings, please contact me at Lara Driving School by either calling or sending a text message on 0412 547 936.  Alternatively, send me an email

I look forward to holding your on-road session in the near future.

What is keys2drive

keys2drive fosters the relationship between the learner driver and their parent/supervisor under the guidance of a keys2drive accredited driving instructor, through a FREE lesson funded by the Australian Government.

keys2drive is the single largest national learner driver safety program ever undertaken in Australia.

The program has been developed by the Australian Automobile Association(AAA) and its members; NRMA, RACV, RACQ, RAC(WA), RAA(SA), RACT and AANT.

In 2011 the Australian Government committed $17 million to implement the keys2drive nationally over 5 years and in the 2016 May budget committed a further $4 million to provide 80,000 to 90,000 free lessons over the next twelve months.

Why keys2drive

Learner drivers are the safest drivers on the road.  However when they gain their P plates and begin solo driving, their risk of fatality and/or having a serious accident, jumps dramatically (20-30 times)

How does keys2drive work

During the FREE lesson, the keys2drive accredited driving instructor uses  ‘train-the-trainer’ approach to introduce the supervisor and the learner driver to a new way of learning called Find Your Own Way (FYOW)

FYOW encourages the learner driver to ask questions, better recognise risky situations and to find and fix mistakes.

FYOW assists supervisors to guide learner drivers to practice longer, with lots of variation (e.g. distractions such as music or additional people in the car, and night or wet weather conditions) and to actively learn by self assessing and self reflecting and become ‘P’ plate ready.

keys2drive improves the quality and quantity of the learner driver experience by assisting parents/supervisors to be more effective in their driver training role.

Additional supporting material for parents, supervisors and learner drivers is available on the keys2drive website.
